WELCOME TO KA ULUKOA!
Ka Ulukoa is home of the the most comprehensive juniors volleyball program in Hawaii today!
A 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, Ka Ulukoa has designed a youth development program that fosters national and international amateur sports competition and educational opportunities for youth in Hawaii.
Ka Ulukoa's focus is on creating well-balanced student-athletes with an eye toward the next level of their development.
We offer a variety of disciplines including strength training, performance coaching, speed, agility, and plyometrics clinics, skills clinics, educational seminars and workshops.
|

|
MISSION STATEMENT
Ka Ulukoa is a non-profit company dedicated to developing and supporting amateur athletes in Hawaii for the purpose of competing in national and international volleyball venues, regardless of financial status. Furthermore, Ka Ulukoa is committed to preparing student-athletes to excel in all areas of life by holding them accountable for athletic, academic, and community based responsibilities. Ka Ulukoa will foster personal growth in a team setting and provide educational opportunities on nutrition, injury prevention, and well being. Ka Ulukoa is devoted to helping student-athletes get into collegiate programs that best meet their academic needs and athletic interests. |
OBJECTIVES
The specific objectives and purposes of this non-profit corporation shall be:
- to select amateur athletes to teams that will compete in local and national competitions;
- to develop teams through activities that include team practices – technical and tactical training, strength training, sports psychology (“performance coaching”), and participation in local and national competitions;
- to identify and develop athletes via programs that provide instruction on sports related topics;
- to promote the sport of volleyball via our website, bimonthly newsletter, and the hosting of camps, clinics, seminars, and workshops;
- to sponsor seminars, lectures, and workshops which focus on sport psychology, injury prevention, nutrition, and general well being that target the general public;
- to publish a newsletter which focuses on sport related information that fosters student-athlete development;
- to offer fee reductions on team dues for academic excellence;
- to offer waivers on team dues for families that demonstrate financial need;
- to encourage team members to participate in community service.

Preparing your child for the next level of competition - and life.
Simply, we're one of the most unique programs available. Academic Excellence, Community Involvement, Cultural Acceptance, Familial Relationship Building, Leadership Development, and Nutrition are pretty unfamiliar terms in most sports organizations today. At Ka Ulukoa however, it's our mission to develop skills through sports participation that translate into meaningful skills for life. We call it our Total Person Education program.
|
Academic Excellence
Ka Ulukoa encourages all athletes to be academically responsible. One of the program goals is to ensure our athletes can make the transition into college. In order to accomplish this goal, every student-athlete in our program must demonstrate an ability to maintain a minimum grade point average (GPA).
Good Academic Standing Policy
All student-athletes are required to achieve and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.75 (out of 4.0). Cumulative GPA verification, the latest report card, must be submitted prior to or at tryouts. After acceptance into the program, student-athletes will be required to show proof that the minimum requirement is being met, via quarterly or end of the semester report cards.
As part of our commitment to remove the financial barriers often associated with competitive team sports, we have created an Academic Fee Reduction Program.
Community Involvement
Ka Ulukoa requires that all team members participate in community service. We encourage our scholar-athletes to be involved in public service that helps those in need, helps another non-profit, helps raise awareness on current social issues, or mentoring to younger children. Our goal is to help young athletes gain a better understanding of the world around them while giving back to a community that provides so much. Participants are required to fulfill their obligation prior to their summer tournaments.
Age Group ------------> Hours of Community Service Required
12 and 13 -------------> 8 Hours
14 and 15 -------------> 16 Hours
16, 17, 18 -------------> 24 Hours
Family Relationship Building
Research has shown that parental involvement can have a positive effect on child development. With that in mind, Ka Ulukoa encourages parents to be involved in both organizational and social capacities.
Roughly ninety percent (90%) of Ka Ulukoa’s staff is parent based. By involving parents, Ka Ulukoa helps families work together in a positive, healthy, and productive environment towards common goals.
Cultural Acceptance
In addition to providing opportunities for children with limited financial resources, Ka Ulukoa’s vision, in part, is to create a culture that embodies and fosters friendships without social boundaries. Each of our teams, including the upper level management, comes from varying ethnic backgrounds. The cultural diversity often provides unique perspectives and approaches to problem solving and policies. Ka Ulukoa contends that people who function in socially diverse environments develop a deeper understanding of the social world and are better able to function as effective citizens.

Leadership Development
Leaders aren't born, they're taught. Every child in our program will go through our 10 week leadership development course once they reach a certain age. The course is designed to analyze the following concepts and applications:
- Exploring Leadership: Understanding the Rewards, Risks, and Responsibilities
- Leading By Example: The importance of leading yourself before leading others
- Vocal Leadership: The second tier... getting the most out of others
Nutrition
Food = Fuel. Eating right can help increase focus, increase energy, improve stamina, and improve performance. Ka Ulukoa emphasizes nutrition before traveling to national venues. Educational material is provided at home, but we’ve found that implementing a nutritional regimen helps overcome disruptions to circadian rhythm and helps sustain more consistent energy levels when competing in mainland events.

UPCOMING EVENTS
Ka Ulukoa requires that all team members participate in community service. We encourage our scholar-athletes to be involved in any number of community based projects. Our goal is to help young athletes gain a better understanding of the world around them while giving back to a community. Participants have until June to fulfill their requirement.
If you know of opportunities, please contact Vanessa Simpkins. |
Free Clinics
We are currently seeking to host free clinics for communities that may not have access to our program. In 2010, we are seeking 4 opportunities on the island of Oahu. If you are interested in helping us identify communities, facilities, and participants, please contact Lee Lamb at lamb@kaulukoa.org. |

Community Service Impact
In 2008, our families volunteered more than 500 hours of their time to community projects and causes. In 2009, we nearly doubled our contributions, volunteering approximately 1100 hours. Our goal for 2010 is to provide more than 1500 hours to the community.
Programs we've lent a hand in the past:
Meals on Wheels, Kau Kau Wagon, Next Step Homeless Shelter, Kalihi Waena Streambank Restoration, Christmas Wish Program, Straub/Kapiolani Women's 10k, and the Honolulu Marathon to name a few. |

Volley-Tots' focus is simple... build a love for the game and develop basic motor skills. This is simply and introduction to the game. This is part of the Ka Ulukoa mentoring program where our athletes build relationships with younger players.

Youth Series (Boys and Girls)
Grades 7 - 8
The Youth series, formerly known as the Intermediate series, is still focused on movement efficiency and basic skill development, but we also introduce advanced techniques and focus more on combining movement patterns that are specific to the game. The Youth series is also designed to help athletes understand how to manipulate the ball and why its important; essential elements for any high school level volleyball player.

Junior Series (Boys and Girls)
Grades 9 - 12
The Junior series, formerly known as the High School series, is focused on combining efficient movement patterns and advanced skill sets. The coaches will isolate some of the skills and work on them individually, but this series is built on component training, ie. blocking with transitioning and attacking, serving and then defending, serve-reception followed by transitioning to attack. At this level, it's important that players can put it all together.

This series is no joke. If you want to wear "the jersey" you have to have serious skills and a tenacious mentality. The Libero series is designed to teach you basic and advanced skills. Open Group (2 hr session; $55 per person)
In addition to skill development and technical proficiency, the sessions are also designed to emphasize maximum effort, building confidence, communication and having fun.
We highly recommend regular attendance, even though the price structure is per session. Irregular attendance tends to hinder athlete development and makes it difficult to create a progressive environment (build off of what was previously learned).
Size: 8 to 12 athletes
Sundays: 8 AM at Susannah Wesley |
Semi-Private (2 hr session; $70 per person)
The Semi-Private sessions are intended to give athletes a better instructor to athlete ratio. In essence, the athletes get more personalized attention. The focus of the session is on skill development and technical proficiency with an end goal of skill mastery. This is an opportunity for athletes to receive technical instruction and repetitions for the various skills required in the competitive volleyball environment.
Size: 4 to 7 athletes |
Pairings (1 hr session; $75 per person)
If you're looking for lots of repetitions but don't want to go it alone, this is the way to go. I would recommend this setting to everyone. All the training environments are great, but this particular setting stands out. This sessions allows the participants to get tons of reps just like one on one but it also helps the athletes stay fresh because of the added downtime. It also allows the coach more flexibility in drill selection. These sessions also have a tendency to be more upbeat than the private setting.
These sessions do have a tendency to be more position specific, ie. Libero, Setter, etc.
SIze: 2 to 3 athletes |
Private (1 on 1) (1 hr session; $99)(10 hr pkg; $924)
The Private session is one on one with the instructor and clients customize the training.
If you're primary goal is to correct a technical deficiency in a specific area, please consider making an appointment on an "as need" basis (2 or 3 appointments may be required).
If you are looking to go in-depth or excel at a given skill set, 10 hour programs are recommended.
One on One sessions are physically demanding so we recommend a session length of 1 hour. We will not allow any athlete to train more than 1 1/2 hours in a private setting. |
